All you need to know before you go to the April Fair of Seville

All you need to know before you go to the April Fair of Seville

The April fair of Seville is held annually in the spring, on the campus of Real de la Feria. It features streets decked out with stalls and lanterns and a circulation of horses and riders, drawing an influx of public that reaches half a million visitors daily. The April fair has the declaration of Festival of International Tourist Interest and significantly impacts both the social and economic landscape of the Andalusian capital.

If you are considering visiting the April fair this year, here are a few things to know to enjoy it to the fullest.

What is the origin of the Fair of April of Seville?

The April fair began its journey in 1847 as a commercial event for the sale and purchase of livestock. That same year, it was a great success, attracting over 25,000 visitors.

Over the years, it evolved into a social celebration, moving away from its commercial origins and becoming the most important annual event in Seville, gaining universal fame.

Since 1973, it has been held in its current venue, which occupies more than a million square meters divided into three distinct areas: The Real de la Feria, The Street of Hell, and the car parks.

When does the Fair of Seville take place?

The April fair initially lasted for 3 days, extending to 6 days since 1952.

Traditionally, there has always been at least a week between the end of Holy Week and the start of the April fair, which sometimes leads to the event being held in May.

The municipal regulations stipulate that it is held from the 2nd Sunday after the end of Holy Week until the following Saturday, including both days. If it were to be celebrated in May, it would be advanced to the first Sunday after the end of Holy Week.

What time should you go to the April Fair?

You can visit from morning to night, but the excitement typically doesn’t peak until around 3 PM. The culminating point is between 5 and 8 PM, when you can enjoy the walks in carriages and horses, showcasing the most eye-catching and classic elements of the Fair of Seville.

In the evening, there is still a lively atmosphere, with many stands featuring different performances, although they may not be as visually striking as those in the afternoon.

How to dress for the Fair of Seville?

At the April fair, it’s important to dress well. For women, wearing a good flamenco dress is ideal; if that isn’t possible, at least aim to be well made up and arranged. For men, the best attire is a jacket, with or without a tie. Only riders and children are to wear shorts.

A tip: if you don’t have a good flamenco dress, do not feel pressured to buy one from a cheap bazaar. It’s preferable to be neatly dressed than to appear in a poorly made flamenco costume.

The April fair is an experience worth having at least once in a lifetime. It’s a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Seville and Andalusia, enjoy the best local food and drink, and learn some flamenco and tapas skills during a few unforgettable days.
