December 6 and 8 are holidays in Spain, celebrating both a religious holiday and a civil holiday. The 6th marks the feast of the Virgin of the Immaculate, while the 8th honors the Spanish Constitution of 1978, which ended the political period of the dictatorship and ushered in the democracy we enjoy today.
As these two holidays are closely spaced, it’s a popular time for Spaniards to travel and explore other cities and countries. The anticipation of Christmas adds to the charm, with the streets becoming a perfect setting to experience the city’s festive atmosphere.
In early December, Seville embraces the holiday spirit with beautiful lights and decorations. Traditional markets and attractions pop up at key landmarks in the historic center, including Plaza de San Francisco, Puerta Jerez, Alameda Hercules, mushrooms, and Prado of San Sebastián.
The city goes all out to illuminate its main shopping streets. Street performances bring joy to both locals and visitors, featuring campanilleros singing traditional Andalusian carols, tunas, Cádiz Carnival ensembles, and various musicians with lively street shows.
Shopping in Seville in Early December
During this festive time, explore the traditional shops in the city center. Don’t miss the Fair of the Old Book and Trucks at Plaza Nueva, the Christmas Market at Sevilla Nervión Plaza on Luis de Morales Street, and various Sunday markets. Noteworthy is the numismatic market, fossils, and antiques held at Plaza del Cabildo, right opposite the Cathedral.

During the first half of December, 17 convents in Seville sell delicious traditional sweets handmade by the nuns themselves at the Gothic Palacio Alcázar de Sevilla.

Shows and Performances
Numerous musical shows, concerts, theater performances, flamenco, and exhibitions are scheduled across different venues in the city. Fibes Auditorium features popular contemporary singers, while the Maestranza Theater hosts musical and lyrical performances.
Belenes Circuit
The nativity scenes, or belenes, are abundant in Seville this season. They can be visited throughout the city, making it a perfect activity, especially if you’re traveling with children. Many are located in churches and convents, particularly those associated with brotherhoods, as well as in shopping centers. Look out for clear signage directing you to these beautiful displays.
The Origins of the Constitution Party
The 1978 Constitution is commemorated with the delivery of the Plaza de España Awards at the government delegation in Andalusia, located in the Plaza de España North Tower. This event is invitation-only.
In the square, you can view a tile commemorating the Cádiz province, which celebrates the Constitution of Cádiz from 1812.
Visit El Alcázar de Sevilla, where the Supreme Board of Government of Spain and the Indies convened during the French invasion. It was here that the Legislative Commission worked on a draft constitution that would later be approved in 1812 by the Cortes of Cádiz.
Feast of the Immaculate Conception
On December 8, Seville celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a day dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is regarded as a significant figure in this officially Marian city.
The renowned painter Murillo created some of the best-known representations of the Immaculate, which can be viewed at the Museum of Fine Arts, open during this festive period.
Martinez Montañez is the artist behind the popular image known as the “blind girl,” which can now be seen in the Cathedral.
Throughout Seville during this time, many religious and cultural events celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In the morning, a solemn Mass and procession Tercia is held at the Cathedral, attended by municipal corporation members. In the afternoon, the city’s typical custom, the dance of the “Sixes,” honors the Immaculate Virgin. This celebration lasts for eight days after the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
