With the official name of Metropol Parasol, the complex also known as Las Setas de Sevilla is located in the heart of Seville, a city in Andalusia famous for cultivating local roots and culture.

It encompasses the whole square, forming a remarkable covering. That’s right, we are talking about the popularly known Las Setas de Sevilla (or Metropol Parasol).
The project was selected through a competition in which a German architect named Jürgen Mayer emerged as the winner among 335 projects.
Construction and structure of the Metropol Parasol
Las Setas de Sevilla consists of a complex supported by six concrete pillars, wrapped in a laminated wooden grid that interlaces at the upper part of the structure. Each pillar has a different weft, creating the illusion that the whole set is in a wavy motion.
Without a doubt, it represents one of the highlights of the architecture of the city and of Spain. If you are in Seville, it is an essential stop on any complete itinerary.
Construction began in 2005 and was completed six years later, in 2011. The project of Las Setas de Sevilla experienced significant delays, which tripled the initial budget. Even today, there are many criticisms surrounding this superstructure in the city center, regarding its design, materials, and costs to the city government, especially among the more conservative population.

Regardless of criticisms, Las Setas de Sevilla (Metropol Parasol) has become one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Seville, and indeed the entire Iberian Peninsula.
The goal of constructing this building was to infuse modernity into the center of Seville and to attract tourists. This objective has clearly been achieved, as the complex received one million visitors in its first year alone. This number has continued to grow over the years and is expected to multiply in the future.
At the top of the wooden structure is a large concrete walkway, approximately 250 meters wide. Visitors can walk and enjoy a 360-degree view of the city (remember, this is the best place for a panoramic photo of Seville).
The complex also houses a market, a museum, a multifunctional space for events, restaurants, and even an archaeological space featuring preserved ancient ruins. In short, it is a genuinely multi-thematic tourist attraction.
Criticisms and problems with the construction of Las Setas de Sevilla
Despite architectural criticisms, the Metropol Parasol is a great example that demonstrates how old and modern architecture can coexist harmoniously. It illustrates that contemporary architecture can revitalize and enrich historical environments.
What was once a lifeless square is now a vibrant meeting place for citizens, tourists, and all kinds of visitors. Las Setas has even become one of the most relevant cultural complexes in Europe, proving that sometimes, uniqueness and originality can effectively rejuvenate neglected historical sites.
Another noteworthy aspect of Las Setas de Sevilla is that it is the largest wooden structure in the world! As mentioned, it was built to renovate the Plaza de la Encarnación and, according to official figures, it is now one of the most famous and visited locations in Seville.
Inauguration of Las Setas de Sevilla (Metropol Parasol)
Inaugurated in 2011 by architect Jürgen Mayer, it retains the distinction of being the largest wooden structure in the world. The site is managed by the construction company Sacyr and comprises five floors dedicated to various attractions.
The pinnacle, though not very high, features a viewpoint offering incredible views of the city, especially at sunset. This space provides a welcome break from the sun, which can be quite uncomfortable during hot weather.

On the first floor, you will find fascinating tourist spots, including: The Antiquarian, the Archaeological Museum, an official arrow shop, a tourist information point, and access to the elevators.

The second floor features the Mercado de la Encarnación along with several restaurant options to sample some local cuisine (though prices can be a bit steep). If you’re hungry or thirsty, it’s best to have something to eat before or after visiting the Metropol Parasol.

The third floor offers a higher square, ideal for relaxation, socializing, and taking in the surrounding sights.

On the fourth floor, you will find the entrance to the Arrow Walkways, accompanied by an events area measuring 500 square meters, complete with a small bar that boasts impressive views of the city.

The opening hours for accessing the viewpoint are Sunday to Thursday from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and Friday and Saturday from 9:30 AM to 11:30 PM. The entry fee is 3 euros for non-residents of Seville.
